Product Description

Pitting the Allies against the combined Axis forces of Italy and Germany in North Africa, the two battles of El Alamein represented the turning point of the Western Desert Campaign. The First Battle of El Alamein took place in July 1942, when the Allies stood firm in the face of a fierce Axis offensive, preventing the German and Italian forces from advancing on Alexandria.

Led by Bernard Montgomery, taking on ‘The Desert Fox’ Erwin van Rommel, the Allies inflicted a crucial defeat in the Second Battle of El Alamein in October and November of the same year. This victory was crucial in preventing the Axis alliance gaining access to the Suez Canal, and to the oil fields of the Middle East, as well as providing a major psychological boost for the Allies.

An official issue of the RAM’s popular Australians at War Series, and strictly limited to a mintage of just 50,000, this Australian legal tender coin is crucial to collectors. Not to be issued for circulation and never to be found in change, this key type is a must-have for a complete collection!
