The Royal Australian Mint is pleased to announce the second coin released in the Inspirational Australians series. This series of $1 coins recognises and celebrates individual achievements and commemorates unique Australians who have made an extraordinary contribution to our society. In 2009, we honour Steve Irwin. Designed by Caitlin Goodall, the coin depicts Steve in his element - amongst native flora and fauna. With his unconventional style and undeniable charisma, Steve convinced us to think about wildlife in a new way. His sudden death in 2006 stunned the world, but his legacy will not be forgotten. His Crocodile Hunter wildlife documentaries; Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland; and the establishment of the charity, Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors has made an indelible mark on wildlife conservation that will live on for years to come.
