On July 21 1969 (AEST) the first human being set foot on another celestial body, urguably the single greatest accomplishment and technical achievent of all time. This feat of ingenuity was a unifying event of global proportions, made possible by the cooperation of people from many countries, including Australia. Undeniably a milestone achievement in the historical landscape of humanity and still a classic memory for many people, the Royal Australian Mint commemorates this event with a special release. The reverse design of this coin depicts the lunar landing module in space, on its approach to the surface of Earth’s moon. The incorporation of pad printing techniques to represent the vast expanse of the night sky is merged with an optically intriguing design which illustrates the foreground/ background relationship that the Moon and the Earth share.
