2009 $5 Fine Silver Proof Coin: International Year of Astronomy - Meteorite Coin
In 2009 the Royal Australian Mint (the Mint) has celebrated the International Year of Astronomy (IYA) by using it as a theme across its year set products. All sets in the IYA range carry special themed packaging and IYA designs are captured on $1 and 20c non standard coin designs. The Mint is now excited to announce another release in the IYA range - a $5 Fine Silver Proof Coin which contains pieces of meteorite. This uniquie coin features a blister packed centrepiece filled with fragments of an authentic meteorite. Surrounding this centrepiece is the trademark artistry of designer Wojciech Pietranik in which the universal appeal of the night sky across the world is so aptly described. The obverse design holds the unique smallform Queen’s Effigy and a representation of the solar system. The reverse symbolically illustrates the connection we all share with the universe through intricate drawings of famous landmarks from around the world. You will recognise iconic places such as Mt Fuji in Japan, the Eiffel Tower in France, the Statue of Liberty in the United States of America and the Opera House in Australia. Along with the four faces looking towards the night sky, they reinforce the IYA message of a global community sharing our universe. The Meteorite encapsulated in this coin fell to earth around 4000 years ago, as part of the Campo Del Cielo (field of heaven) meteorite shower in Argentina. The original specimen used in the creation of this coin weighed 22.8 kilograms.
