Three famous Australians have been invited to design a coin in this flagship series. The first coin for 2007 was designed by Rolf Harris. For 2008 the $1 and $10 Kangaroo coins have been designed by Reg Mombassa.
A prolific artist and freelance designer, Reg’s artwork has graced T-shirts, album and CD covers as well as billboards, calendars, books, diaries and even a Melbourne tram. His artwork has been reproduced in newspapers and magazines such as the Games closing ceremony, Reg contributed to the design of the “Heroes” segment as well as producing installations and designs for other ventures. Reg’s larrikin humour is evident in the design of the 2008 $1 UNC cupro nickel Kangaroo coin. Featuring the iconic kangaroo in Aussie suburbia ready for a game of football, the coin is strikingly packaged in the colours and styles reminiscent of Reg’s the packaging include the highly collectible Reg Mombassa signature.
