The fearsome appearance of the Rhinoceros Beetle, along with the loud hissing sound they produce when stressed, all add to the insect’s reputation as one fierce fighter and relative to its size, is one of the world’s weight-lifting wonders. Scientists believe that the beetle’s strength has evolved to enable it to forage through heavy litter on the jungle floor and dig its way to safety.  Using its horns, it can also dig its way out of a sticky situation by burying itself underground to escape danger. These beetles are found in most tropical rainforests around the equator region.  In spite of their fierce appearance, they cannot bite or sting, and are totally harmless to humans. The Rhinoceros Beetle undergoes an incredible metamorphosis through three stages, from larva to pupa and adult imago.  They are among the largest of beetles, reaching up to six centimetres in length. No wonder this burly bug is the weight-lifting champion of the insect world!
