Official release date is the 3rd October 2011
In 2011, Remembrance Day will fall on the significant date of 11.11.11. To mark this occasion the Royal Australian Mint will be producing a coin, where the principle design element is a bright red poppy. A sign of hope and renewal, the red poppy was among the first plants to spring up in the devastated battlefields of northern France and Belgium. According to the literature of the First World War the poppy also symbolised the “sacrifice of shed blood”. Since the end of this war poppies have been sold to raise money for widows, orphans, and deprived veterans and their families.
The coin has been slightly scalloped to mimic the delicate ripples of the flower’s edge, whilst the centre is printed in the vibrant red reminiscent of this iconic flower. The coin will be presented in a blister and then housed in a holder specially designed for presentation.
